Office Feng Shui: What It Can and Can't Do for Your Team
Short answer: elematch doesn't do feng shui, and this article won't tell you where the fish tank goes. But there's a question underneath every office feng shui search that deserves a straight answer: why do so many companies care? Because what they actually want is a smoother business and a team that clicks. Feng shui works on the space. Whether a team runs smoothly is nine-tenths about how the people combine — and that part has a more direct fix.
Our position, stated plainly
We're a company that turns the five-element framework into a team language, so we get filed under "feng shui" a lot. For the record:
- We don't offer feng shui services of any kind, no orientation readings, no layout advice, no opening-date selection.
- We won't tell you feng shui is nonsense. Whether a space feels right genuinely affects how people work: light, seating, noise; modern workplace design studies exactly these things.
- The only thing we push back on: anything (including our own tool) promising "do this and prosperity follows." Nothing can promise that.
What the boss is actually trying to fix
Listen carefully to how the conversation starts. It's never about walls: "the whole company feels stuck lately," "my managers argue constantly," "we can't keep good people." Only then comes: "...could it be the feng shui?"
Notice it? Every complaint is about people, not space. Feng shui is simply the first available exit, because people-problems are hard to say out loud, "my senior team is at war" is embarrassing; "our office feng shui is off" is socially safe.
Space layer vs combination layer
| Problem | Space layer (feng shui / office design) | Combination layer (team structure) |
|---|---|---|
| Constant arguments | More separation between desks | Name the tense pairings, agree rules |
| Low energy | Light, plants | Match roles to strengths (Low Team Morale) |
| People keep leaving | Comfort | Right people on right work |
How much the space layer delivers, we won't referee. But the combination layer has methods, steps, and words you can actually say in a meeting, starting with each person knowing their own style (Personal Insight), up to the whole team on one page (Team Map).
If you believe in feng shui, this isn't an argument
Genuinely. Hiring a consultant to tune the space and using a tool to tune the team run in parallel, one addresses the environment, one addresses the people. Our only advice: on a limited budget, fix the people part first. A badly combined team will argue in the best-arranged office in Singapore; a well-combined one gets things done at a kopitiam table.

FAQ
Does office feng shui actually affect business results?
Environment affects how people feel and work, that's well supported. "This layout causes that revenue" has no verifiable causal chain. We'll neither confirm nor debunk; we'll just point out that team outcomes track combinations more than layouts.
Can elematch assess my office's feng shui?
No, we don't do feng shui at all. What we do is team composition analysis: who works how, which pairs clash, where the gaps are.
My boss believes strongly in feng shui. I'm in HR, how do I bring this up?
Don't argue. The boss cares about things *flowing*; start there. Suggest a team-composition review alongside the feng shui work, the two don't compete, and ours is cheaper (first team map is free).
